A VANISHING POINT
an evening of art, music, and dance

Tickets:
Regular - $30
Seniors (65+) - $25
Students - $18
Join Hixon Dance on March 20-22, 2026 at Columbus Dance Theatre for a powerful evening of live music and dance. Featuring new commissioned music by local composer Jacob Reed performed live by vocal group Luces Stellarum, pianist Suzanne Newcomb, and percussionist Seth Alexander. The evening explores beauty, homesickness, and the ephemerality of movement and sound. This program also plays with our expectations of time period: new movement to old music, modern music that echoes ancient music, and contemporary dance and sound that unfolds within a timeless philosophy.
Following each evening performance audiences will have the chance to ask questions and learn more about the artist's creative processes during the artist talk backs, moderated by Dr. Hannah Kosstrin of the OSU Department of Dance.
LEARN MORE ABOUT THE WORKS
Danse Suite for Eight
Old meets new in "Danse Suite for Eight," a Modern dance interpretation of Baroque style and form. Set to the virtuosic English Suite No. 5 in E Minor by J. S. Bach, the choreography takes inspiration not only from the musical structure, but also from the characteristics of the French Baroque dances featured in the suite. The choreography reflects the contrapuntal intricacy and emotional depth of the music while paying homage to the refinement and ornate detail of Baroque movement.
My Heart's in the Highlands
"My Heart's in the Highlands" is a quintet that explores isolation, homesickness, and abandonment; there can be a helplessness at times of major transition, and this piece delves into the emotions and psychology that occur during this sense of foundational loss. While there is no specific narrative, the dancers have an obvious connection and shared vulnerability. A beautiful piece last seen at Playhouse Square in Cleveland.
"The five dancers in Sarah Hixon's My Heart's in the Highlands moved slowly but gracefully through simple steps. The music by Part manifested the quiet spirituality so much associated with his work, and that was clearly reflected in the reverent movement vocabulary." ~ Barbara Zuck, The Columbus Dispatch
A Vanishing Point
"A Vanishing Point" is a dance & music collaboration about the ephemerality of movement and sound that uses the visual art concept of a “vanishing point” as a basis for design. It also explores the Japanese philosophy of “mujo” or impermanence—that all things are constantly changing, moving, and transient. Movement, by nature, vanishes as it happens. This work explores and highlights that perishability both visibly and audibly. Featuring commissioned music by local composer Jacob Reed, performed live by vocal group Luces Stellarum, pianist Suzanne Newcomb, and percussionist Seth Alexander.
